Final Stats
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Miami RedHawks fought valiantly against the Mid-American East Division leading Bowling Green Falcons Tuesday night, but turnovers cost them in an 85-65 defeat. The team falls to 4-14 overall and 2-3 in the MAC. The Falcons are 15-4 overall and 5-0 in the MAC. Maggie Boyer led the RedHawks with 18 points.
In addition to several unforced turnovers to begin the game, the inability to keep the Falcons off the free throw line was the main story of the first half. Bowling Green scored 19 of its 46 first half points from the charity stripe, only missing once. Early on it did not seem that would be a factor Courtney Reed, Rachael Hencke and Ashleigh Brown each drove to the basket for layups to give the RedHawks an 8-7 lead. The Falcons then went on an 11-2 run to take an 18-10 advantage of their own. Two Erin Wisner free throws and a Brown layup cut the deficit to 18-14 with 9:47 remaining and forced a Bowling Green timeout.
With Bowling Green in the bonus, the Falcons proceeded to hit 12 free throws in a row as part of a 21-9 run that expanded the lead to 39-23 with 2:43 left in the period. Miami was able to break that up with four free throws of its own from Hencke and Boyer, and it went into halftime trailing 46-27.
Brown and Hencke hit jumpers to begin the second half as the teams traded buckets. With the score 58-40 with 13:46 remaining, Bowling Green went on a 10-1 run to get its largest lead at 68-41. After a quick timeout, Boyer began to heat up. Two jumpers from her, along with a three-pointer from Courtney Osborn helped pull the RedHawks to within 19 at 71-52. The Falcons eventually pushed the lead back to 25 at 85-60, but a Boyer jumper and a Hencke three-pointer made the final score 85-65.
In addition to Boyer's 18, Hencke finished with 16 points. Wisner nearly had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. The RedHawks outrebounded the Falcons 36-25. Bowling Green finished 28-for-31 from the free throw line, while Miami was 23-for-28.
Miami continues its road trip on Saturday when it travels to Toledo for a 2 p.m. game.
