OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University men's swimming and diving team begins the 2010 portion of its schedule with a dual meet against its oldest and most traditional rival, the University of Cincinnati. The first men's event at the Nixon Aquatic Center starts Friday at 5 p.m.
The RedHawks are ranked 23rd among Mid-Major schools and has a 3-4 record in dual meets.
Miami is led by divers JIM BERES (So., Columbus) and CHRIS HORNER (So., Columbus) who have notched 10 first-place finishes between them. The swimmers are paced by freestyler DAVE BROWN (Sr., Lake Orion, MI) who has notched seven victories and seven runner-up finishes this season, either in individual or relay events. Senior co-captain and breaststroker MIKE CARROLL (Sr., Toledo) has five wins and sophomore backstroker and freestyler Chris Gunnels (So., Chapel Hill, NC) has four victories.
UC All-America honoree Josh Schneider has showed strong form of late, winning three events at the Miami Invitational from Dec. 3-5, 2009: the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 100 butterfly. He made the NCAA 'B' standard in all three races. His 50 freestyle time of 19:45 is currently the second-fastest mark in the country while his 100 butterfly time of 47:07 broke the meet record and is the No. 5 time in the nation.
"Cincinnati is a great traditional rivalry with a strong swimming and diving tradition," said Head Coach Pete Lindsay." We will be looking to the competition to point us to our events for the MAC meet March 4-5-6. The class of `13 is a little less experienced in collegiate distances so several members will be testing out their third events. There should be some very spirited competition."
Miami's women's team also begins dual meet action against UC at 5 p.m.
