OXFORD, Ohio - Senior forward Ashleigh Brown scored 17 points to lead three RedHawks in double figures, as Miami defeated Ohio 66-58 Wednesday night in Mid-American Conference action. The RedHawks improve to 4-12 overall and 2-1 in MAC play. The Bobcats fall to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.
A three-pointer and layup from Courtney Osborn helped Miami jumped to a 9-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game. Ohio scored the next six points to close within one at 9-8 with 13:37 remaining in the period. That is when the RedHawk defense kicked it into the next gear.
Over the next 10:30, Miami held the Bobcats without a single point forcing 11 turnovers during the stretch. It became an 18-0 run that featured three layups from Brown along with a couple from Kirsten Olowinski. The RedHawks eventually increased the lead to 19 at 31-12, before Ohio closed the half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 31-19 at the break.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half until Olowinski hit a key three-pointer with 13:20 remaining to give Miami a 44-30 lead. The Bobcats attempted to rally, but Olowinski responded with a couple more jumpers and two blocks. With the score 53-39,
Ohio went on a 12-4 run to close to within seven at 57-51 with 4:00 minutes remaining. After a Brown free throw, Olowinski hit another jumper to put Miami back up nine at 60-51. The RedHawks then hit six-of-seven free throws down the stretch to put away the 66-58 win.
In addition to Brown's season-high 17 points, Osborn scored 16 while Olowinski contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Rachael Hencke led Miami with nine caroms on the day. The RedHawks shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55), compared to 36.7 percent (18-for-49) for the Bobcats. Miami outrebounded Ohio 36-35 for the game.
The RedHawks conclude their three game homestand with a match against Akron Saturday at 4 p.m. That game is part of a doubleheader that will see the men's team take on Ohio at noon.
