With the win Miami University Head Coach Charlie Coles tied the Mid-American Conference record for career league wins. Coles has 194 wins in 20 seasons as a head coach in the MAC, tying former Toledo Head Coach Bob Nichols.
Miami played its first overtime game of the season, battling back from a 13-point deficit. Senior guard Kenny Hayes drained a 3-pointer with 1:09 to play in regulation to even the score and send the game into overtime.
The last time Miami and Kent State had a game go into overtime was on Jan. 2, 2000, in Oxford with the Golden Flashes posting a 61-57 win. In the 125 meetings between the programs, this is just the fifth overtime game. Miami has won four of those contests.
Miami took its first lead of the game with 1:32 remaining in overtime when senior guard Kenny Hayes drained a pair of free throws to give Miami a 52-51 win.
Sophomore forward/center Julian Mavunga had all of his 13 points in the second half and overtime. His first points came with 9:57 left in regulation. He later scored nine straight points and pulled Miami within two points of the Golden Flashes three times.
Miami amassed eight blocked shots, which ties for sixth on Miami's single-game chart. The most critical block came from junior guard Rodney Haddix II as time expired in regulation.
In the first half, Miami had nine turnovers and no assists. The RedHawks posted nine assists and just three turnovers in the final 25 minutes, including just one turnover in overtime.
Miami's 11 first-half points tied for the second-fewest ever by a Miami team. The only lower total in the opening 20 minutes was an eight-point effort vs. Dayton on Dec. 29, 2001. The RedHawks came back and matched their first-half total in the first six minutes of the second half.
Miami was outrebounded 42-37, but the RedHawks' total was a season high. Miami had 36 boards twice this season -- at Towson on Nov. 13 and vs. Evansville on Nov. 28. Antonio Ballard tied his career high of 11 rebounds (also vs. Kent State, on Jan. 17, 2009)
