Miami Defeats Houston 3-0 at Ladyjack Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Miami won its second straight match at the Ladyjack Invitational Saturday morning with a 3-0 win over Houston. The RedHawks improve to 5-6 overall, while the Cougars fall to 3-12.
A balanced attack from Miami featuring kills from Megan Griffin, Maria Leahy and Michele Metzler helped the RedHawks jump to an 8-4 lead in set one. With the advantage at 16-10, three kills from Metzler helped spark a 5-2 run that pushed the lead to 21-12. That proved to be more than enough as Miami closed out a 25-16 victory with a kill from Cassie Farrell and a setting error by the Cougars.
After giving up the first point to Houston in set two, the RedHawks scored five straight points off two kills each from Leahy and Metzler. The Cougars went on a 7-2 run to take the lead back at 8-7. Metzler continued her strong play with two more kills and a block as Miami retook the advantage at 19-14. The RedHawks closed out the set with a 6-3 run, finished off by a Christina Menche kill off a Michelle Mangia assist.
With Andrea Atteberry serving, Miami quickly turned a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 lead to begin set three. Houston continued to make several attack errors as the RedHawks extended their advantage to 17-7. The teams traded the next 14 points to give Miami match point at 24-14. Jenn Caylor won set three for the RedHawks by putting down the service ace.
Leahy led Miami with 13 kills and nine digs. Metzler scored 10 kills and hit .600 for the match. Lisa Treadway led the RedHawks with 18 digs, while Atteberry recorded 23 assists. Miami hit .324 for the match, compared to .092 for Houston.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Ladyjack Invitational later Saturday when they take on the host Stephen F. Austin at 8 pm (EDT).
