OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami volleyball team has won all six sets so far at the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Troy Saturday morning at Millett Hall. The RedHawks improved their record to 3-5 while Troy now stands at 3-6.
Fresh off a 3-0 victory over St. John's in their first game of the tournament the night before, the RedHawks came out on fire in the first set, scoring the first five points of the frame and building a 9-2 lead. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Raseman tallied three kills and a block assist to lead the RedHawks early on. Troy put together a couple small runs to cut the lead to 11-6, but couldn't get any closer as Miami built a big lead and held on for the 25-15 win.
Sophomore outside hitter Jenn Caylor, scored the final two points of the set on kills. Senior setter Andrea Atteberry led the way throughout the set with 12 assists, two kills, two digs and two block assists. In the second set, Miami again took the first point, but the Trojans fought their way to a4-2 lead. The Red and White battled back to tie it at four, but Troy again controlled the momentum, taking a 5-4 lead. Miami regained the lead at 6-5 on a Megan Griffin kill. The pesky Trojans kept the score close, trading points for much of the match to keep the RedHawk advantage no more than two points. Troy tied the game at 13, and again at 15, but couldn't take back the lead as Miami rallied to push their advantage to 20-15. The Trojans pulled to within three at 18-21, but the RedHawks proved to be too strong, closing out the set, 25-18, on a Raseman kill.
Miami again took the first point of the set and jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third frame thanks to two kills apiece from Raseman, Maria Leahy and Hallie Hanks. The RedHawks extended their lead to 15-9 on another Leahy kill, but a Troy rally brought the score to a 15-15 tie. After a Miami point, the Trojans again put together a run to take their first lead of the set at 17-16. They continued to put the pressure on the RedHawks, extending their lead to 22-17. The Red and White clawed back to within two with the next three points, but Troy pushed them to the brink with the following two points to make it 24-20. Miami fought off four game points with a kill by Hanks, a Troy attack error and two kills from Leahy to tie the score at 24. With Lisa Treadway serving, Miami continued the rally to finish off the Trojans 26-24.
Leading the way for the RedHawks were Raseman with 12 kills, four assists and an ace, Leahy with a double-double of 13 kills, 13 digs and an ace, and Atteberry with 36 assists, four kills, three blocking assists and eight digs. As a team, Miami recorded a .305 attack percentage while holding Troy to .174.
