As Head Football Coach Michael Haywood coaches his first game at the helm of the RedHawk program on Saturday, Miami will honor former head football coach Dick Crum who defeated Kentucky during his first season guiding the Red and White in 1974. The 1979 Miami team that defeated Kentucky will be honored at the game as well.
Miami also will be honoring several if its championship teams from last season during Saturday's football game, including women's tennis (MAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions), softball (MAC Tournament Champions), women's cross country (MAC Champions), women's swimming and diving (MAC Champions), the synchronized skating senior and collegiate teams (National Champions) and ice hockey (National Runner-Up).
Prior to Saturday's game, Miami's Tailgate Town will take over the Jungle Zone at Paul Brown Stadium. Tailgate Town will feature Miami's marching band, cheerleaders and dance team and will have interactive games, food and fun for the whole family.
In addition to football, five other teams are in action this week. The men's and women's cross country teams also open up their seasons this weekend as both compete at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge on Saturday, which begins at 10:45 a.m. Women's soccer also resumes action after a 13-day layoff, traveling to Eastern Illinois for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
After a 1-2 start at the Active Ankle Challenge in Saint Louis last weekend where it faced two top-20 teams, Miami's volleyball team travels to Indianapolis Saturday and Sunday to face Northwestern, Western Kentucky and IUPUI at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The RedHawks dropped a three-set decision to two-time defending national champion No. 1 Penn State (RECAP) and a four-set match to No. 20 Saint Louis (RECAP), before pulling out a thrilling, come-from-behind, five-set win against Alabama (RECAP).
Field hockey also opened its season last weekend. The RedHawks dropped games at No. 6 Virginia (RECAP) and against Virginia Commonwealth (RECAP) last weekend. The RedHawks travel to Louisville on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
Also this week is the first HawkTawk presented by Brick Street. HawkTawk is the weekly coaches' show that takes place at 7 p.m. Thursdays throughout the year. The Voice of the RedHawks Steve Baker and Tim Bray host the show. Coach Haywood and Head Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Coach Kelly Phillips will be this week's guests.
