OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University women's swimming coach Dave Jennings has added Oxford's KATIE ARLINGHAUS and Harrison's LAURA KRUEGER to the roster of his defending Mid-American Conference championship team.
Arlinghaus, who lives just a few minutes from the Miami campus, attended Talawanda High School and set a school record of 1:05.88 in a 100-meter breaststroke event at the Ohio state prep meet. She also is expected to compete as a sprint freestyler.
Krueger, from McAuley High School in suburban Cincinnati, earned four swimming letters and qualified for the state meet each season. She is targeted for action in the individual medley and butterfly events with the RedHawks.
KATIE ARLINGHAUS (Oxford/Talawanda High School) Set Talawanda records in the 50 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, the 100 fly, the 200 IM, and with the 200 medley and freestyle relays for coach Jackie Huff ... a four-time state qualifier and four-time national YMCA participant ... earned first-team all-conference kudos and honorable mention for the Cincinnati Enquirer all-star squad ... she broke her neck at the beginning of his senior year and was sidelined for four months, but she battled her way back two months later to place ninth in the 100 breaststroke state competition ... her dad and three brothers all attended Miami ... Katie was a member of Talawanda's National Honor Society and will be a Pre-Med major at MU.
Quoting Dave Jennings: "Katie Arlinghaus will help us in the breaststroke and sprint freestyle events. She is coming off of a remarkable year. She broke her neck in September, was out of swimmer until January, returned to swimming and place ninth in the 100 breaststroke at the Ohio High School Division I State Swimming Championships. Doing what she did shows the tremendous potential in the years to come."
LAURA KRUEGER (Harrison/McAuley High School) McAuley's four-time MVP, she earned second-team honors on the Greater Cincinnati all-star squad ... a four-time state meet qualifier and seven-time national YMCA participant, she set a school record in the 100 fly with a time of :56.87 ... also posted a time of 2:05.43 in the 200 IM ... was the salutatorian of her senior class, earning honor roll laurels each quarter ... Laura's brother, Justin, will graduate from Miami in 2010 ... plans to major in Biochemistry at MU.
Quoting Dave Jennings: "Laura Krueger will provide help in the individual medley events and depth in the butterfly events. She is a great student and a very hard worker. She swam for coach Mike Leonard of the Powel Crosley YMCA. He does a terrific job with this program. Former RedHawk swimmers Molly Wiethorn and Michelle Reynolds have come from this program. I look for Laura to make a mark in our program."
Altogether, 10 swimmers and two divers earned scholarships from Miami in 2009. Signing last November were in-state recruits STACIE CLAGG and AMANDA GRANDJEAN from Canton, TAYLOR GARBER from Dayton, MADDIE KETE from Bay Village, JENNIFER WARMOLTS from Upper Arlington and BEKKA WESTRICK from Fairfield. Out-of-state signees include CORINNE BANGS from Monument, Colo., MAEGAN O'CONNOR from Fishers, Ind., DANICA ROSKOS from Pennington, N.J., and LEAH THORNTON from Helena, Ala. All 12 of the athletes recorded better than a "B" average in high school, with seven of the 12 earning at least 3.8 grade-point averages.
"Including six walk-ons, we have 18 incoming freshmen that will replace and strengthen our team for 2009-10," said Jennings. "Certainly it will be challenging because we had such a strong senior class this past season. Mark Davis, KongRong Li, and I feel very good about the incoming class. It will be an exciting season to see them develop in the pool and on the diving boards."
