MUNCIE, Ind. - The softball team fell 5-3 in its regular season finale Sunday at Ball State. The RedHawks are 28-22 overall and finish 13-9 in the MAC. The Cardinals are 28-22 and 18-3 in the MAC.
Ball State scored three runs in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third to account for their tally. After the Cardinals made it 5-0, Miami brought in Jessica Simpson in relief and she was stellar, allowing no runs on only one hit in 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.
The RedHawks were held in check by Ball State starter Laura Masch until the top of the seventh inning. Alexis Javier hit a long double to right center that brought home Kelly Cabana and put Miami on the board. Two batters later with runners on first and second and two outs, Sarah Billstrom hit a double to left center to score both Javier and Jordan McElroy and make it 5-3. With runners on second and third, Masch forced Jenna McGivney in a ground out to first base to secure the win for Ball State.
Billstrom finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI. Javier was 1-for-2 with a walk, one run scored and one RBI.
The RedHawks will be the fourth seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. In the opening round of the double elimination tournament, Miami will face five seed Northern Illinois on Wednesday, May 6. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
