Tennis Completes Perfect League Season

April 18, 2009

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- After losing the doubles point for the first time in 11 matches, Miami rebounded for wins in four singles matches to earn its ninth straight win, 4-3 over Bowling Green Saturday at the Keefe Tennis Courts. With the victory, the RedHawks (13-6, 8-0) complete Mid-American Conference play undefeated for the first time since going 9-0 in 1999.

Miami's Monica Gorny and Anastasia Dracheva won their 12th straight match as a double team 8-0 at No. 2, but Bowling Green captured an 8-5 victory at No. 1, leaving the No. 3 match for the doubles point. Riekie Honiball and Brintney Larson battled the Falcons pair down to the wire, but fell 9-8 (7-5) in the tiebreaker.

The RedHawks quickly recovered. Gorny evened the score at 1-1 when she rebounded from a loss yesterday, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. It was her 10th win in 11 outings and improved her season record to 13-3. Dracheva put Miami ahead 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 before Larson extended the margin to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5.

Bowling Green closed to within a point, 3-2, by winning at No. 3 singles before Megan Martzolf clinched the overall win with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4. The Falsons eeked out a point at No. 6 for the final scoring.

"I am very pleased to get out of here with a win," Head Coach Howard Joffe said. "We played two very good teams on the road this weekend and won both matches. Megan came from behind to get us the win and we are thrilled to bits. Every starter wanted to play today (despite having already clinched the league championship). It was less about being undefeated and more about preparation for the tournament here next week."

Miami enters the MAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed next week, back at Bowling Green. The RedHawks will open play Friday morning at 10 a.m. against the winner of Thursday's opening match between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
