PORTLAND, Maine--By a 13.84-point margin, Miami University's collegiate synchronized skating team seized its fifth-straight national title and 11th overall as the RedHawks claimed gold in the collegiate division at the 2009 U.S. National Synchronized Skating Championships on Saturday afternoon.
"The collegiate team did a fabulous job. They were right on their game," said head coach Vicki Korn. "It was difficult for them to after going from Harbin (for the 2009 Winter World University Games) to here in such a short amount of time, but they were troopers, and I'm really proud of them."Less than two weeks removed from its appearance at the Winter World University Games in Harbin, China, Miami had a dominant performance, skating its free skate program to the music of Mamma Mia. The RedHawks amassed a score of 100.63, the only team in the collegiate division to compile a triple-digit score. Miami had a clean skate and recorded a total component score of 46.63, while recording a total element score of 54.00.
The RedHawk collegiate team bettered second-place Illinois by nearly 14 points. Illinois recorded a score of 86.79 to edge Michigan State (85.79), while MSU edged Delaware (85.36).
Miami's senior team, which sits in first place after its short program on Friday night, seeks to make it a gold medal day for Miami when it performs its free skate program in the final competition of the event.
