NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Miami University's men's swimming and diving squad finished third among Mid-American Conference teams at Saturday's (Feb. 21) MAC/Sun Belt Championships in Nashville, Tennessee.
Eastern Michigan won the league title with 1046.5 points and Buffalo placed second with 639.5 points, while Coach Pete Lindsay's squad wound up third with 588 points, nearly twice as many as it scored in the 2008 championship meet.
Miami's most impressive performance of the evening was a second-place MAC finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The RedHawk unit of sophomore Mark Healey (Jenison, MI), senior Zac Siegel (Wilmette, IL), senior Nick DuPuis (Atlanta, GA) and junior DAVE BROWN (Lake Orion, MI) shaved more than seven seconds off its previous season-best effort with a clocking of 3:01.49 in Saturday's final event. That added 48 more points to Miami's team total.
Sophomore Darin Smith was Miami's top individual points scorer on Saturday, contributing 17 points with his third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle final (15:48.65). Freshman Brendan Melling (Solon) placed fourth among MAC swimmers in the 1650 (15:54.55) and senior Scott DuCharme (Rochester Hills, MI) finished eighth (16:17.58).
DuPuis picked up 15 team points for Miami with his fourth-place MAC finish (1:49.82) in the 200 butterfly. RedHawk teammates Jason Hass (So., Jackson, MI) and ANDY NEFF (Sr., Chesterland) earned respective seventh- and eighth-place honors.
In the 200 breaststroke final, junior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo) picked up 11 team points for the RedHawks with his sixth-place finish (2:05.45). Senior Davis Mello (Brentwood, TN), junior Austin Kosier (Toledo) and senior Jason Bank (Farmington Hills) placed seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. The Miami quartet picked up a combined 20 points for the team.
The 200 backstroke final saw freshman Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC), junior MATT GRUBB (Centerville) and Smith place fifth, sixth and seventh, adding eight points to Miami's total.
Healey placed seventh among MAC athletes in the 100 freestyle, earning two team points.
