Miami's Chris Heaton Makes MAC History

OXFORD, Ohio--Miami's Chris Heaton (Centerville) made Mid-American Conference history Friday night (February 20), winning the one-meter competition to become the first athlete in league history to win eight individual diving titles.
Heaton's first-place finish among league divers enabled him to sweep both the one- and three-meter diving competition each of his four seasons of competition at Miami. RedHawk teammates Cameron Horner (Columbus) and JIM BERES (Columbus) placed third and sixth, respectively, in the one-meter event. Altogether, Heaton, Horner and Beres tallied an impressive 77 points for their team.
Besides Heaton, Horner and Beres, Miami's top individual points scorer was Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) who tallied 22 for the team with his fourth-place MAC finish in the 200 freestyle (1:41.37) and another four points with a fifth-place placing among league swimmers in the 100 backstroke (:51.87).
Junior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo) earned 15 points in the 100 breaststroke with his third-place MAC finish (:57.35). Fellow junior AUSTIN KOZIER (Toledo) placed sixth among league swimmers in that event to add three points to the RedHawk total.
Miami senior Nick DuPuis (Atlanta, GA) had a third-place league finish in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in a time of :50.88.
In the 400 individual medley, senior Jason Bank (Farmington Hills) and Carroll placed sixth and seventh, respectively, among MAC swimmers, winning 15 points for the RedHawks.
In the 100 butterfly, a trio of Miamians contributed 15 team points. ROB JACKSON (Cincinnati) placed fifth among league competitors, while ANDY NEFF (Chesterland) was seventh and Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) finished ninth.
The 400 medley relay unit of DuPuis, Carroll, Jackson and DAVE BROWN (Lake Orion, MI) placed third among MAC teams, finishing in a time of 3:22.80 and earning 34 team points.
