Miami Cruises Past Xavier in Women's Tennis

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami earned straight-set victories in four singles matches, plus gained two other points to earn a 6-1 victory over local rival Xavier Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club.
Miami took a 1-0 lead with a sweep of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf were down 2-1, but rattled off five straight games enroute to an 8-3 victory. Anastasia Dracheva and Monica Gorny saw a 5-2 lead disappear into a 6-6 tie, but won the next two games for an 8-6 decision. In the final pairing, Brintney Larson and Riekie Honiball broke a 4-4 tie by winning four straight games for an 8-4 victory.
The lead quickly went to 3-0 when singles play began. Gorny earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 while Dracheva won her No. 3 match by a 6-1, 6-1 count. Danesis clinched the RedHawks' triumph with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
Larson claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 5 singles category, while Matzolf rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 4.
Xavier (4-3) earned its lone point at No. 6 singles as the Musketeers won 6-2, 7-5.
Miami returns to action on Friday when it travels to No. 60 Louisville.
