OXFORD, OH - Eastern Michigan's Tavelyn James scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the first four minutes of the second half as the Eagles outscored Miami 30 to 20 after halftime on their way to a 56-45 victory at Millett Hall Saturday afternoon.
Jenna Schone led Miami with 12 points while Jaclyn Leininger added eight points and nine rebounds. Cassie Schrock scored 11 points for the Eagles (6-17, 2-9). Miami (13-11, 5-6) was hurt when injuries to Ashleigh Brown, Maggie Boyer, and Erin Wisner forced them to miss the game.
Eastern Michigan jumped out to a 7-1 lead to begin the game. Miami battled back to take its first lead at 14-11with 8:45 to go on a Briana Dunlap three-pointer. The RedHawks were able to build their lead to five, 17-12, on a Leininger jumper with 6:46 remaining in the half. The teams then traded baskets, before the Eagles closed the half on a 12-8 run to take a 26-25 advantage into the locker room.
Eastern Michigan was just 8-for-27 from the field in the half for 29.6 percent, while Miami was 10-for-26 for 38.5 percent.
Ashley Hawkins opened the scoring in the second stanza when her layup gave Miami its final lead of the game at 27-26. James then scored a layup and hit three treys sandwiched around a Sydney Huntley-Rogers layup to spurn a 27-3 Eagles' run that built the Eastern Michigan lead to 53-30 with 4:42 remaining in the game.
Miami closed the game on a 15-3 run but it was too little too late as Eastern held on for the 11-point victory.
Miami finished the game shooting just 18-for-59 from the field for 30.5 percent. Eastern shot 17-for-52 from the field for 32.7 percent.
Miami is off for eight days before they travel to Kent State for a Mid-American Conference East Division matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
