ANN ARBOR, Mich.-Miami University's synchronized skating teams rounded out their stint at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic on Sunday. It was the season-opening event for all three RedHawk teams.
Miami's senior team finished third Sunday's free skate. The RedHawks amassed 109.92 points with their 1940s themed program to finish ahead of the Crystallettes (103.18) and behind the Haydenettes (127.40) and Les Supremes (113.44). Skating to music from Romeo and Juliette, the RedHawk senior team placed fourth in the short program on Saturday, compiling a score of 63.24. They finished just behind third-place Les Supremes (65.62). The Haydenettes finished first in the short program (71.98) followed by the Crystallettes (66.63).
Skating to "Bohemian Rhapsody", the RedHawk junior team was fifth in the free skate event, compiling a score of 75.44. Miami topped the Hockettes (72.86) and Synergy (68.68). NEXXICE won the junior free skate with a score of 103.66. They were followed by the Chicago Jazz (93.86), Xcellence (79.06) and Gold Ice (77.18). On Saturday, Miami's junior team placed third in the short program competition with their program choreographed to "Your Song" from Moulin Rouge, but was the top US finisher. The RedHawks produced a score of 51.68. NEXXICE won the junior short event (60.74) followed by Gold Ice (57.18). Miami edged fourth-place Synergy (50.66).
In the collegiate division, Miami posted a score of 92.94 with its "Sex and the City" themed program to finish second behind Delaware (94.66). There was a large gap between the top two teams and the rest of the field with Illinois placing third with a score of 78.40 points and Wisconsin taking fourth with a score of 76.58.
Miami returns to action in January. The RedHawk junior team competes at the Junior World Qualifier Jan. 8-9 in Lowell, Mass, while the senior and collegiate teams compete at the Mid-America Championships Jan. 29-30 in Fraser, Mich.
