OXFORD, Ohio-- As the final night gets set to begin at the 16th Annual Miami Invitational, the men's swim team looks to change their momentum and have a positive finish.
A total of four Miami swimmers are set to take their marks in their respective championship heats tonight, including two freshmen, Alex Reinhardt and Brent Curtis, who this morning set personal best times in the preliminaries. Reinhardt will swim the 500-yard freestyle, Curtis the 100-yard freestyle, and Rob Jackson and Jason Hass will challenge for the 100-yard butterfly.
Other swimmers of note for the RedHawks include sophomore Chris Gunnels who narrowly missed qualifying for the championship heat in the 200-yard backstroke but will head up the competition in the consolation heat, and seniors Michael Carroll and Austin Kosier who finished within a second of each other in the 200-yard breaststroke and will also look to help the team from the consolation heat of that event.
Personal bests were set today by Ian Joyce in the 200 back (1:57.96), Ryan Neff in the 500 free (4:52.15) and 200-yard individual medley (2:00.46), Sam Childs in the 500 free (4:53.92), Curtis in the 100 fly (54.78), and Anderson Whipp in the 200 breast (2:18.62) and 100 free (47.69).
The finals begin tonight at 6 p.m. Fans that paid admission for the morning session will not be charged for the finals, however heat sheets are not included and will be available for $2.00. Admission is $5.00 for those who did not attend the morning session.
Just prior to Saturday night's finals, there will be a diving exhibition featuring a touring group of young Olympic hopefuls from China, youth diving elite from the United States, former RedHawk standout Chris Heaton, and members of Miami's men's and women's diving teams.
