Oxford, Ohio -- The Miami women's swimming team began a busy weekend on the right foot by defeating the University of Buffalo by a score of 171-129 Friday evening at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
The victory evened Miami's dual-meet record at 2-2 (1-0 in Mid-American Conference meets).
"I thought we raced very well", said Head Coach Dave Jennings. "it was something we really emphasized in the team meeting. It was a great overall team effort."
The first event of the evening was the 200-yard medley relay, where the team of Leah Thornton (Helena, AL), Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati), Allison Way (Omaha, NE) and Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) edged Buffalo to the wall, taking the event with a time of 1:45.10. Miami gained some separation two events later, as a clean sweep by RedHawk swimmers Way, Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA), and Taylor Garber (Riverside) in the 200-yard freestyle staked the team to a 17-point advantage. Way won the event in 1:54.55.
The strong team performances continued as Thornton won the 100-yard backstroke (57.24), reigning MAC Champion Kelsey Vehr took the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.45), and freshman Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN) touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.23).
Buffalo showed it wasn't done, winning the three-meter diving and 100-yard freestyle events, but the strong backstroke duo of Kasey Carpenter (Cincinnati) and Thornton pushed the RedHawks ahead further as they finished first and second in the 200 yard event. Carpenter picked up her individual win, finishing in 2:03.53.
Other event winners for Miami included Vehr in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.20), O'Connor in the 100-yard butterfly (57.29), and Megan Brunn (Mansfield) in the 200-yard IM (2:09.55).
The RedHawk swimmers have a quick turnaround as they jump back into the pool tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. meet against the University of Akron at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
