OXFORD, Ohio - The defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami University women's swimming and diving team hosts weekend MAC meets against Buffalo and Akron at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
The RedHawks' meet on Friday against the Bulls begins at 4 p.m., while Saturday's competition versus Akron starts at 1 p.m. Each event is free admission.
Miami took on Big Ten power Purdue last Friday and lost by a score of 181.5 to 116.5. On Saturday, the RedHawks split their squad, beating Xavier (285-219) and losing at nationally ranked Louisville ( 164-130).
The Bulls (1-0, 0-0 MAC), Friday's foes, are coming off a successful season- opening 137.5-75.5 win over the Duquesne Dukes.
Akron looks to build upon the success and experience gained at the Tom Stubbs Relays, translating wins into points in the first scored events of the season. Two weeks ago, the Zips opened the season at the Tom Stubbs Relays, picking up an impressive six wins in the 11-event meet, where the Zips also shattered three Bowling Green meet records.
"We're excited about this weekend's meets," said Coach Dave Jennings. "We will see a much-improved Buffalo team on Friday. They have a strong freshman class and key returning athletes.
"Saturday, the Akron Zips will bring one of the top diving programs as well as one of the best sprinters in the conference. It will be a challenging weekend."
Jennings's freshman class has performed impressively thus far, led by Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) and Leah Thornton (Helena, AL). Westrick has the team's top efforts in the 50- (23.94), 100- (53.10) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.05) events, and is a member of two relay teams that are No. 1 in the young season. Thornton has Miami's best marks in the 100 backstroke (57.33) and the 100 butterfly (57.00), and is a contributor on three top-rated relay teams.
Two other rookies have led Miami's diving efforts. Danica Roskos (Pennington, NJ) has the best mark in the one-meter event (283.35) and Corrine Bangs (Monument, CO) leads the way at three meters (313.80).
As usual, junior Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati) has proven to be the person to beat in the breaststroke events, posting the top times in the 100 (1:03.12) and the 200 (2:19.01).
