RedHawks Cruise to Victory Over Xavier

The Miami men's swimming team celebrated Homecoming weekend in style, defeating Xavier by a score of 143.5-115.5 on Saturday at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
The RedHawks jumped out to an early lead thanks to a strong performance by the 400-yard medley relay team, with Chris Gunnels, Michael Carroll, Rob Jackson, and Dave Brown combining to secure a first-place finish in a time of 3:30.14. The lead was then extended in the 1000-yard freestyle, as the tandem of Darin Smith and Brendan Melling finished first and second, with Smith winning the event in a time of 9:53.87.
Miami continued its dominance with easy wins in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke as relay teammates Chris Gunnels and Michael Carroll picked up the victories. Gunnels swam the 100 back in 51.30, while Carroll completed the 100 breast in 58.96.
Other event winners for the RedHawks included Mark Healey in the 50-yard free (21.64), Gunnels in the 100-yard free (46.53), and Carroll in the 200-yard breast (2:10.57). Freshman Alex Reinhardt had a strong showing as well, taking second in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Jason Hass won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.68, edging out teammate Rob Jackson by one one-hundredth of a second. Hass also won the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.79).
The RedHawks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 as they travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
