EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Miami men's swimming and diving won seven out of 13 events to defeat Mid-American Conference newcomer University of Evansville 132-111 Friday night in both teams' season opener.
The RedHawks swept the top three spots in three different events during the meet. All three Miami swimmers, senior David Brown, freshman Brent Curtis and junior Mark Healey, finished in less than 49 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Brown led the way with a time of 48.22.
Sophomore Brendan Melling (4:53.15) won the 500-yard freestyle, followed closely by classmate Trevor Tilly and freshman Sam Childs. Tilly was also an event-winner, finishing first in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Cameron Horner took first in the three-meter diving event with fellow sophomore Jimmy Beres in second and freshman Chris Hoppler third. Beres edged Horner for first in the one-meter diving competition. The divers just missed the 1-2-3 finish in the one-meter as Hoppler took fourth.
Other event winners for the Red and White were juniors Jason Hass and Tommy Janszen in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, respectively.
Head coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks now travel to Carbondale, Ill. to take on Southern Illinois at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
