MUNCIE, Ind. - A strong three-point shooting night for Ball State proved to be the undoing for the Miami University women's basketball team as they fell 81-66 Saturday night in Muncie. Miami falls to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals are 14-7 and 6-1.
Jenna Schone scored 23 for the RedHawks, but it was not enough to overcome the Cardinals seven 3-point baskets.
The jump shots were falling early for both teams as Schone and Ashley Hawkins each hit a couple quick shots from 15-feet out. The Cardinals hit three 3-point baskets to build an early 19-14 lead with 12:08 remaining in the half.
With Miami trailing 23-14, a layup by Schone and a three-pointer from Boyer helped key a 17-6 run that gave, the RedHawks a 31-29 lead. A coast-to-coast fast break layup from Hawkins put Miami in front for the first time in the game. Ball State closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 38-33 lead into the break.
Ball State came out hitting 6-for-9 from the field to start the second half as it increased the lead to 54-41 with 15:37 remaining in the game. The RedHawks countered by beginning to drive the ball inside with Schone and Courtney Reed each penetrating the paint for layups. That strategy brought Miami to within five at 59-54, but the Cardinals countered with a 10-2 run that pushed the lead up to 69-56 with 7:19 remaining. Schone hit a couple more jump shots to pull the RedHawks as close as 11 at 73-62, but it was not enough as the Cardinals finished off the 81-66 victory.
In addition to Schone's 23, Ford scored 14 for Miami. The RedHawks shot 41 percent, but the Cardinals countered with a 46 percent shooting pace. Miami outrebounded Ball State 42-34 for the game.
The RedHawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. game.
