Final Stats
Omaha, Neb. - No. 10 Miami (13-8-4) skated to a 2-2 tie against Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night inside the Quest Center.
Miami had an early opportunity with an 11 second five-on-three advantage but the RedHawks were unable to capitalize. The Red and White were unfazed and got on the board first with a solid slap shot from Jarod Palmer (Fridley, Minn.). Pat Cannone (Bayport, N.Y.) brought the puck up ice and left for Palmer who fired the puck past Maverick goalie Jeremie Dupont stick side.
The RedHawks earned five power plays in the first frame and converted on one. The Red and White killed off the only power play attempt for Nebraska -Omaha. Connor Knapp (York, N.Y.) stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first period.
Miami and Nebraska both battled hard in the second period but the frame was scoreless with Dupont making eight saves for the Maverick and Knapp earned eight saves to push his two-period total to 19. The RedHawks went 0-of-2 on the power play but did go 4-of-4 on the penalty kill.
The Mavericks got a big opportunity early in the third as Justin Vaive (Toronto, Ontario) was called for tripping and 15 seconds later Tommy Wingels (Wilmette, Ill.) was sent to the penalty box for obstruction-hooking giving UNO a two man advantage for 1:45. Miami battled and Palmer came up big and the Red and White were able to kill off the two man advantage. The momentum supplied by the penalty-kill unit found its way to the offensive end as Andy Miele (Grosse Point Woods, Mich.) found the net. Vaive dumped the puck into the offensive end and it was trapped against the boards by Gary Steffes (Grand Blanc, Mich.)
Nebraska-Omaha would battle back and scored two goals in the final 7:53 of the game. Tomas Klempa scored the first at 12:07 and Eric Olimb tied the game with 1:18 remaining with an extra-attacker goal.
