OXFORD, Ohio - A tough shooting afternoon plagued the Miami University women's basketball team Wednesday as they fell to Ohio 66-53 in Mid-American Conference play. Miami falls to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the MAC. Ohio is 7-10 and 3-2.
The game was the first "Class at the Court" event for Miami as it hosted all three elementary schools from the Talawanda school district. The attendance for the game was a season high 1,792.
The RedHawks were only able to hit 19-for-66 (28.8 percent) for the game, including 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from three-point range.
The offensive struggles started early during the first half, as Miami hit only 3-for-22 (.136) during the first 12 and a half minutes of the game. While the defense was strong during that period, the RedHawks fell behind 22-8 as Ohio guard Jennifer Bushby scored seven early points. Ashley Hawkins broke the drought by hitting the team's first three-point basket of the day with 6:05 remaining in the half. That was followed by an Ashleigh Brown jumper to pull Miami to within nine at 22-13, but a 5-1 Ohio run quickly pushed the lead back into double digits.
Jenna Schone hit a jumper with 3:15 remaining as the RedHawks scored the next six points, but the Bobcats in a layup at the buzzer to enter halftime in front, 29-20.
For the first few minutes of the second half it seemed that both offenses got on track as the team's traded jumpers. With the score 33-26 in favor of Ohio, the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run that was stopped by back-to-back jumpers from Maggie Boyer.
Trailing 52-41, Schone hit a three-pointer that pulled Miami within eight at 52-44 with 6:49 to go. The RedHawks went cold again from there. They continued the strong defensive effort by holding Ohio to only 14 points over the last seven minutes even though they were taking chances trying to get steals. However, they were only able to score nine points of their own and fell by the 66-53 final.
Schone led Miami with 12 points and seven assists, while Boyer contributed 10.Ohio was led by Lauren Hmiel with 18 points. The Bobcats outrebounded Miami 51-32.
The RedHawks return to action on Saturday when they take on Toledo at 2 p.m. at Millett Hall. It is part of a doubleheader that will feature the men against Buffalo at 4 p.m.
