RedHawks Roll Over Pioneers, 8-1, in Evanston

With two RedHawks scoring a pair of goals apiece, the Miami University field hockey squad downed Sacred Heart University, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Elizabeth Gilroy and Maggie Marcum each scored two goals for the Red and White, with Gilroy adding an assist. Jessica Reading, Courtney Fretz, Christine Brightwell and Brittany Branco also scored for Miami, while Kate Snyder and Teja Kammler each had two assists and Brightwell had one.
Abbey Huck and Kelsey Dean split time in goal with Huck playing the first half and making one save and allowing a goal. Dean played the second half, shutting out SHU and stopping one shot.
The RedHawks outshot the Pioneers 27-5, putting 10 shots on goal, and had 11 penalty corners to Sacred Heart's one.
Fretz's goal in the sixth minute put Miami on the board. Gilroy and Kammler assisted the score, which Fretz tipped in at the left post. After a Sacred Heart goal knotted the score in the 12th minute, Miami rattled off seven unanswered goals with Reading scoring in the 19th minute unassisted and Brightwell scoring in the 21st minute on a penalty stroke.
Gilroy then scored back-to-back goals in the 29th and 32nd minute with assists from Snyder and Brightwell on the first score. Marcum opened up the second half scoring with back-to-back goals in the 44th and 46th minute. Kammler assisted Marcum's first score.
Branco, a freshman, then closed out the game's scoring when she registered her first career score in the 59th minute with an assist from Snyder.
The RedHawks, now 3-1 on the year, will open up Mid-American Conference play on Friday when they travel to Central Michigan for a 2 p.m. game with the Chippewas. Miami will face Colgate the following day in Mount Pleasant at 1 p.m.
