Miami Opens UNLV Tourney with 3-0 Win over Fullerton

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Miami University volleyball team started off with a victory Friday during day one of the UNLV Tournament, defeating Cal-State Fullerton 3-0. The RedHawks are now 2-2 on the season, while the Titans fall to 2-2.
Miami jumped to a 5-1 lead in set one that featured three straight kills by Megan Griffin, Michele Metzler and Emily Schroeder respectively. Fullerton was able to tie it at 12 with an 11-7 run, but a 6-2 run led by two kills from Griffin pushed the lead back to four. The teams traded points until Metzler took a pass from Andrea Atteberry and killed it for a 22-18 lead. From there, the RedHawks force the Titans into two errors and came away with a 25-19 win.
Fullerton jumped ahead early in the second set to an 8-5 lead. Kills by Metzler and Griffin, followed by five errors by the Titans, and Miami found itself ahead 12-10. The teams went back and forth as neither team could build a lead greater than two points until Hallie Hanks scored a service ace to give the RedHawks a 20-17 lead. Fullerton pulled to within one at 24-23, but after a timeout to regroup, Schroeder was able to score the winning kill and Miami took the set 25-23.
The third set was very similar in that neither team could build a significant lead. The Titans had the only three-point lead for either team in the entire set when they built an early 6-3. Miami came right back with two kills from Hanks, one from Schroeder and a service ace from Melissa Zenz to tie the set at seven. With Fullerton ahead 16-14, the RedHawks were able to force the Titans into an attack error, followed by a kill from Metzler to tie the score back up. The teams traded points until it was tied at 23. From there Hanks and Metzler scored back-to-back kills to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
For the game, Schroeder had 15 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Atteberry had 39 assists and Zenz recorded 22 digs.
The RedHawks conclude play with two games tomorrow at the UNLV Tournament. At 1:00 p.m. (EST) they face their first ranked opponent of the season when they take on 10th-ranked Wisconsin. They will then matchup against the host UNLV Rebels at 10:00 p.m. (EST).
