PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--Shaving 14 strokes off its first-round score, Miami University's golf team regrouped with a solid second round and sits in 13th place at the Saint Mary's Invitational heading into Tuesday's final round.
"The second round was more like us," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "We finished the second round much better. We finished this round, the last 4-5 holes, much like our opening round of the season (at the Rutherford Intercollegiate)."
In the first round, four of the five RedHawks--Aaron Crist, Michael Drobnick, Mark Robinson and Craig Voorhees--carded 76s to land in a tie for 45th place, while Nathan Sutherland recorded an 80 to sit in a tie for 76th place.
"We had a good day of practice yesterday and felt prepared going into today, and were really disappointed with this morning's round. We didn't handle the start and the finish of the round well," said Lubahn.
"Nathan had a horrific finish to his first round, and I'm sure he would tell you that he was disappointed with his score," added Lubahn. "But when I saw him at the turn, I told him to wipe the slate clean and start over, and he had a look of determination in his eyes that showed he believed it."
Firing a 69 in the second round, Sutherland catapulted himself into a tie for 48th place at seven-over par 149 heading into the final round.
"Nathan got off to a hot start in the second round, and I'm really proud of the way he rebounded," remarked Lubahn. "We really needed an effort like that from him this afternoon."
Three other RedHawks improved their scores in the second round. Crist fired a 72 and leads the RedHawks in a tie for 41st place at six-over par 148. Drobnick carded a 74 and is tied for 54th place at eight-over par 150, while Robinson shot a 75 and is tied for 59th place at nine-over par 151. Voorhees shot a 79 in the second round and is tied for 74th place.
Of Miami's two newcomers to this week's line-up, Lubahn was encouraged by their overall performances. "Although his score doesn't necessary reflect how well he played, Craig did a good job this morning, and I thought Mark did a nice job this afternoon. I like the chemistry of this team. We have some strong players at home, but it's good to be able to shuffle in the guys who are playing well because, competitively, we can't afford to have a bad week."
"Overall, I'm proud of the way the guys came back this afternoon to take 14 shots off our first-round score," continued Lubahn. "We're a better team than the scores we are putting up right now. That's all a part of the process, and we just need to keep our minds on that."
San Francisco leads the tournament with a two-round score of 572. Miami is just one stroke out of 12th place and just five behind the 10th-place team.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Saint Mary's Invitational with Tuesday's final round.
