OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday on Miami Soccer Field as Michigan defeated the RedHawks, 1-0.
Kelsey Rogind of Michigan scored the only goal of the game early in second half (47:02) on a sliding challenge that beat Krista Pace (Jr., Toronto, Ontario). Miami (1-1-0) put on a late charge and Danielle Hays (Sr. Apex, N.C.) had a free kick in the final minute, but Michigan keeper Madison Gates made the save and gave Miami its first loss of the season.
Sara Lund (So., Malmo Sweden) pushed the ball forward for the RedHawks on many occasions, but each attempt came up short for Miami.
"They are a good team and these are the kinds of teams you want to play," Miami head coach Bobby Kramig said. "Once we get to conference play, we will be happy we played a tough team like this."
The first half was physical with the Wolverines and RedHawks combining for 11 fouls. Each goalkeeper record one save with Madison Gates making a diving save on a shot by Lund. Pace collected her only save of the first on a shot by Michigan's Meaghan Hennessy from just outside the 18-yard box.
"I think this game will give us confidence head forward," senior Daniellle Hays said. "When you play team from a big conference like the Big Ten, it is give you a chance to take on a team that will push you really hard and give you a chance to see how hard you and your teammates can work."
Up next for Miami is rival Cincinnati. The RedHawks host the Bearcats at 1 pm on Sept. 5 at the Miami Soccer Field.
