KETTERING, Ohio - For the second-straight year Laura Neufarth is the individual champion of the Dayton 5K Challenge and, for the second-straight year, the Miami University women's cross country team won the team title.
The RedHawks earned 28 points to top the University of Cincinnati, IPFW, the University of Dayton, IUPUI and Xavier.
"It was a good meet for us and a good opener," said first-year RedHawk head coach Rita Arndt-Molis.
Neufarth, a junior, took the title in 18:15, five seconds faster than her winning time a season ago and 12 seconds faster than second place. Rachel Patterson got her sophomore season off to a good start with a fifth-place finish and a time of 18:39. Arndt-Molis commented on her squad's strategy.
"We showed a lot of poise and commitment. They ran into miles two and three very aggressively and moved into position well on a hot and grueling day. It was a good effort by the collective group."
Sophomore Kelsey McHugh and freshman Maggie Bingham finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 18:40 and 18:43. Amanda Mirochna, a junior, came in ninth at 18:49 to round out the RedHawk scoring.
Also posting times for Miami were sophomore Katie Lenahan at 19:11; freshman Brigid Carey at 19:33; sophomore Julianna Roche at 19:46; freshman Tory Paez at 20:14; and sophomore Jillian Black at 22:36.
Overall, Arndt-Molis is pleased where her team is at, one meet into her first season in Oxford.
"We have the makings of a good team. We just have to get back to training, back to work," she finished.
Miami will next compete at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State on Sept. 12 in East Lansing.
