OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's soccer team opened their 2008 season with a win on Friday at Miami Soccer Field over Morehead State 3-1.
The RedHawks open the 2008-09 athletic season for Miami University in dramatic fashion as they fell behind early to Morehead State on a deep goal from Bethany Davidson in the fifth minute. Davidson stuck the ball from almost 25 yards and hit the back of the net.
Miami would rally behind 2007 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Sara Lund (So., Malmo, Sweden). Lund tied the game in the 16th minute with a hard shot that hit Eagles goalkeeper Sam Yocke and went in. Lund was far from finished as she scored again about 13 minutes later. Lund fired a shot at the near post that hit the pipe ran along the goal line hitting the far post and then going in the net.
"I really think that goal lifted the team's sprits," Lund said. "This is a team that can do great things and everyone rallied after that goal."
Lund finished off her hat trick in the 48th minute after Stephanie Wilson (Sr. Elma, N.Y.) tipped the ball, Lund came sliding in a beat the keeper to close out the scoring. The weather picked up in the 53rd minute bringing a stoppage in play that last 50 minutes. After the delay, Miami killed the clock and Krista Pace (JR. Toronto, Ontario) made some solid stops to secure the win for the RedHawks.
"The team had a lot to overcome to win and they just did great," Miami head coach Bobby Kramig said. "It was freshman move in day yesterday, the early goal and then the rain delay but they were great. We had a lot of people playing out of position and they all did great. Danielle Hays did a great job for us in the back and Haley Clark just doesn't make mistakes."
The win for Miami is their third consecutive against Morehead State to open the season. Miami moves their all time record against the Eagles to 5-0-0.
The next game for the RedHawks will be Sunday, Aug. 31 as the Michigan Wolverines will come to Oxford. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
