OXFORD, Ohio-- Senior Ryan McHugh firmly established not only his name here at Miami, but amongst swimmers nationwide yesterday with his performance in the 100 freestyle at the Toyota Grand Prix held at Ohio State University. With a ninth-place finish overall and a time of 51.32, McHugh has qualified for the US Olympic Time Trials.
His performance also earned him a place among the likes of world-renowned swimmers. In his event, the only two athletes to ever split the second half of the race in a faster time than McHugh were Caesar Cielo, the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Champion in the 50 free, and Michael Phelps, six-time gold medal winner at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Over the course of his college career McHugh established a name for himself among Miami athletes. He finished this season with the top team times in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free. At the MAC/Sunbelt Championships, McHugh earned third, fourth and fifth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 100 freestyle, respectively. His accomplishments earned him a place on the All-MAC First-Team; his second selection as an All-MAC performer.
The US Olympic Time Trials are set to be held at the Quest Center in Omaha, Neb. on July 30-July 7.
