Kent, Ohio - Miami completed its four-game road trip Sunday, falling to Kent State in the second game of their series, 5-1. The RedHawks went 2-2 on the trip, putting their Mid-American Conference record at 9-5 on the year.
Sophomore shortstop Sarah Billstrom drove in Miami's lone run in the first inning, giving her two runs batted in on the weekend. With the RBI, Billstrom increased total to 13 for the year.
Meredith Linch entered the game in relief, pitching five strong innings for Miami. Linch allowed just one run on one hit, while striking out four Kent State batters.
The RedHawks pushed the first run of the contest across in the top of the first inning, when Sarah Billstrom drove a ball to the left centerfield gap, scoring Breanna Robinson from second base.
Kent State came back in the bottom half of the second, scoring four times on two doubles and two errors. The scoring outburst chased starter Shalise Lugo from the game, who allowed only two earned runs, her first since giving up one against Wright State (Apr. 15).
KSU extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, when left fielder Corey Houk sent a pitch over the center field wall for her third round tripper of the year.
Gabrielle Burns stifled the RedHawk bats for the final six outs of the game, recording her 14th victory of the season.
The RedHawks will now head back to Oxford and welcome Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan for two games apiece next weekend to close out the home portion of their regular-season schedule.
