DAYTON, Ohio - Two free throws with 12.5 seconds remaining in overtime by senior point guard Jenna Schone sealed a 69-66 win for Miami University over Dayton Wednesday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 6-2 on the season with their fourth straight win. The Flyers fall to 6-4.
The first half started slowly for the RedHawks as they only managed six points in the first nine minutes and fell behind 14-6. Miami got back into it with the three-point shot, as back-to-back treys from Jenna Schone and Stephanie Ford, followed by two from Maggie Boyer sparked a 12-8 run that pulled the RedHawks to within four at 22-18 with 8:18 remaining in the half.
With the score 24-20 at the 6:01 mark, Courtney Reed picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup. After the teams traded free throws, Boyer hit her third three-pointer of the half to give Miami a 27-26 lead. With thirty seconds remaining in the half and the score tied at 29, Reed made a 15-footer to send the RedHawks into the locker room with a 31-29 lead.
Boyer led the team with nine points in the half. The RedHawks shot 36 percent from the field, and 42 percent from three-point range.
Dayton opened the second half on a 13-9 run to regain the lead at 42-40. Another Boyer three gave the RedHawks the lead back at 43-42. The teams traded baskets back and forth until a Schone three-pointer gave Miami a 54-52 with 7:38 remaining.
With the score 58-56 in favor of the Flyers, Schone hit a driving layup in the lane with exactly 4:00 on the clock. Dayton scored with 3:45 remaining to go ahead 60-58, but the RedHawks held them from scoring for the remainder of regulation. Unfortunately, Miami could only manage two more free throws of its own, and the game went into overtime tied at 60.
Ashleigh Brown broke the tie with a put back off a Reed missed three-pointer to start overtime. After a Dayton free throw, the RedHawks went on a 5-0 run off a layup by Leininger and a three-pointer from Schone to go up 67-61 with 1:59 remaining. A 5-0 answer by the Flyers pulled them to within one at 67-66 with 34 seconds remaining, but Miami was able to drain 22 seconds off the clock on the next possession before Schone was fouled and hit the two free throws to seal the win.
Schone led the RedHawks with 19 points, while playing all 45 minutes. Reed scored 13, while Leininger and Boyer each contributed 12. Miami shot 34 percent for the game and was outrebounded 58-43.
