OXFORD, Ohio -- Eight talented swimmers and two outstanding high school divers have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers at Miami University, head coach Dave Jennings announced Thursday. The class includes six student-athletes from the state of Ohio, and one each from Colorado, Indiana, New Jersey and Alabama.
"This is a good group of young ladies that will fit well into our team environment," said Jennings. "It's just a great group of people. We're looking forward to working with these ladies next fall."
Among the in-state recruits are STACIE CLAGG and AMANDA GRANDJEAN from Canton, TAYLOR GARBER from Dayton, MADDIE KETE from Bay Village, JENNIFER WARMOLTS from Upper Arlington and BEKKA WESTRICK from Fairfield. Out-of-state signees include CORINNE BANGS from Monument, Colo., MAEGAN O'CONNOR from Fishers, Ind., DANICA ROSKOS from Pennington, N.J., and LEAH THORNTON from Helena, Ala. All ten of the athletes recorded better than a "B" average in high school, with five of the ten earning at least 3.8 grade-point averages.
Here are biographical sketches on the 10 signees:
CORRINE BANGS (Monument, CO/Mile High Dive Club)
An outstanding high school diver who is expected to score well against Mid-American Conference competition... was the bronze medalist in platform diving at the AAU National Meet this season and earned AAU All-America honors... has compiled a 3.44 GPA in high school and plans to major in interior design and biology at Miami.
Quoting Miami Diving Coach KongRong Li about Corrine Bangs: "Corrine is a very hard worker and is extremely passionate about diving. We expect that she will be a very strong scorer in the MAC."
STACIE CLAGG (Canton/Glen Oak High School/Canton City Schools Swim Team)
Has posted fine times in the breaststroke (1:07.11 and 2:24.43) and the individual medley (2:09.44)... has compiled a 4.2 GPA in high school and plans to be a Pre-Med student at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Stacie Clegg: "Stacie is a multi-sport athlete who has competed with the cross country team. We look for her to add good depth to our breaststroke and individual medley events."
TAYLOR GARBER (Dayton/Stebbens High School/Dayton Raiders Swim Team)
Has posted excellent times in the individual medley (2:05.82 and 4:33.41), the freestyle (24.5, 52.49, 1:53.02 and 5:07.41), and the butterfly (55.68 and 2:01.53)... was a state finalist at the Ohio championships a year ago... her high school GPA is 3.2 and she plans to major in business management at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Taylor Garber: "Taylor is a multiple junior national qualifier in the IM, the butterfly and the freestyle events. We anticipate that she can be a big contributor at Miami."
AMANDA GRANDJEAN (Canton/North Canton Hoover High School/Canton City Schools Swim Team)
Has posted excellent times in the butterfly (:57.50 and 2:13.74) and the backstroke (:59.00) events... was a state meet qualifier in the 100 Fly... expects to major in political science and international studies at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Amanda Grandjean: "Amanda has a tremendous work ethic and loves to compete. We think she will help us in the sprint butterfly and backstroke event."
MADDIE KETE (Bay Village/Magnificat High School/Lakewood Recreational Swim Team)
Has posted excellent times in the freestyle (0:23.7, 0:52.81) events... has recorded a 3.9 GPA in high school and plans to major in either business or physical therapy at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Maddie Kete: "We feel that Maddie is just starting to move forward with her swimming career. She will help us in the sprint events."
MAEGAN O'CONNOR (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern High School/Southeastern Swim Club)
Has swam fine times in the freestyle (24.2 and 52.96), the butterfly (56.89 and 2:06.06), and the backstroke (57.94 and 2:07.89)... has recorded a 3.6 GPA in high school thus far and plans to major in exercise science at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Maegan O'Connor: "Maegan is a junior national qualifier in the butterfly and backstroke events, and she's also a strong sprint freestyler. She is a great team player who will fit in well."
DANICA ROSKOS (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central High School)
A tremendously talented diver with great potential. She is a two-time high school All-American (2007 and '08) and was a Junior Olympics national finalist in 2006.
Quoting Miami Diving Coach KongRong Li about Danica Roskos: "We think that Danica has a very good chance to advance to the NCAA level of diving."
LEAH THORNTON (Helena, AL/John Carroll High School/Hoover Blue Thunder Swim Team)
Has competed in the freestyle (52.97, 1:53.50, 5:05.20 and 17:21.95), the IM (2:06.84 and 4:28.54), the butterfly (57.33 and 2:07.18), the backstroke (57.30 and 2:04.69) and the breaststroke (1:08.90 and 2:27.04)... holds a GPA of 4.45 and intends to major in Pre-Med/Biology.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Leah Thornton: "Leah is an Alabama state high school champion who can swim just about every event. She also is an exceptional student who ranks second in her class."
JENNIFER WARMOLTS (Columbus/Upper Arlington High School/Upper Arlington Swim Club)
A member of the Upper Arlington High School state championship team, she competes in the freestyle (54.30, 1:58.50 and 5:10.96), the butterfly (57.61) and the backstroke (57.36 and 2:06.15)... currently has a high school GPA of 3.8... plans to major in zoology.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Jennifer Warmolts: "Jennifer is a junior national qualifier in the 100 backstroke and just missed in the 200 backstroke. We expect that she will also compete in the butterfly and middle-distance freestyle events."
BEKKA WESTRICK (Fairfield/Fairfield High School/Greater Miami Valley YMCA)
Has competed in the freestyle (24.6, 53.02, 1:53.29), the IM (2:09.56), the butterfly (57.9 ), the backstroke (59.86) and the breaststroke (1:08.97)... was an Ohio state finalist... her aunt, Sara Westrick, is a former letter winner at Miami... has compiled a high school GPA of 3.8 and plans to be a kinesiology major at Miami.
Quoting Dave Jennings about Bekka Westrick: "Bekka is a great middle-distance freestyler and is strong in the IM and butterfly events. She has a lot of potential in many different areas."
