OXFORD, Ohio - Despite a career-best performance by junior freestyler David Brown (Lake Orion, MI), Miami University's men's swimming and diving team fell at home to nationally ranked Purdue, 187-113. It was the first dual-meet defeat for the RedHawks this season (2-1).
Brown took first-place finishes in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, recording respective times of :21.29, :46.98 and 1:43.09.
The only other RedHawk to win an event was sophomore Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) who captured the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:54.70. Hass placed second in the 200-yard IM.
Miami finished two-three and picked up seven points in four different swimming events: the 100 backstroke with freshman CHRIS GUNNELS (Chapel Hill, NC) and junior MATT GRUBB (Centerville); the 200 backstroke with sophomore Darin Smith (Bossier City, LA) and Grubb; the 200 IM by Hass and senior Jason Bank, and the 1000 free with Smith and freshman BRENDAN MELLING (Solon). Second-place finishes were registered in the 100 free by Gunnels, the 500 free by Melling, and the 100 breaststroke by junior MIKE CARROLL (Toledo).
The diving competition for this meet was held last Saturday. Purdue's Olympian, David Boudia, set a pool record in the three-meter diving with a score of 476.70. Miami senior diver Chris Heaton (Centerville) placed second in both the one- and three-meter events. RedHawk freshman diver CAMERON HORNER (Columbus) placed third in the one-meter, finishing ahead of Boudia.
"Our team had some very good races against Purdue," said head coach Pete Lindsay. "We appreciate Purdue giving us a chance to compete against them."
The Miami men's next meet is Friday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. when they travel to Kenyon College.
