No. 10 Miami Shuts out No. 8 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - No. 10 Miami rode a dominate effort by goalie Cody Reichard to a 2-0 win over No. 8 Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.
Pat Cannone found the net early for the RedHawks as he gave the Red and White a 1-0 lead at 5:05 of the first period. The goal was set up by excellent moves up ice by Andy Miele who weaved through two Notre Dame players and left it for Cannone, who found the net for the third time this season. The Fighting Irish had three power plays in the first but the RedHawk penalty kill unit stopped each of Notre Dame's chances. Reichard made some excellent stops in the first frame and also halted Notre Dame breakaways by Dan Kissel and Christian Hanson
Miami extended its lead in the second period when Miele found Gary Steffes in slot and Steffes slammed home his fourth goal of the season. The opportunity came off a faceoff won by Cannone and then the Irish tried to clear the zone by the pass was picked by Miele and he found Steffes for the goal at 5:02 of the second. The RedHawks killed off five second-period penalties. Coming into the game Notre Dame was tied with Miami for 10th in the country on the power play. Reichard posted his second-consecutive period with 10 or more saves as he stopped 10 Irish shots on net.
Both teams battled in the third period and Notre Dame pulled Jordan Pearce with 1:50 remaining in the game for the extra player. The Fighting Irish then earned a six on four advantage on the ice when Vincent LoVerde was called for a cross check. Reichard did not waiver in net and made three more saves and earned his first career win and first career shutout.
Miami for the game was 8-8 on the penalty kill and were led on the kill by Reichard as he made 15 saves on the penalty kill. The RedHawks were outshot by the Fighting Irish 29-23.
The Fighting Irish and the RedHawks will be back in action tomorrow night inside the Joyce Center, the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes
The assist for Miele at 5:05 of the first period was his first point of the season.
The win for Reichard is the first of his career and is also the first shutout of his career.
The shutout is the first for Miami since Feb. 22, 2008 vs. Western Michigan - Jeff Zatkoff 23 saves
The win over a ranked foe is the first for Miami since Nov. 16, 2007 when Miami knocked off No. 2 Michigan State
The shutout for Miami is the first RedHawk shutout against a ranked opponent since Miami shutout Notre Dame Feb. 7, 2004.
