BEALLSVILLE, Md.--Senior Aaron Crist fired 70-74=144 to finish in second place, while three other RedHawks finished among the top 20 to propel Miami University's golf team to a first-place finish among the 12-team field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.
"We hung in there and were able to get the win," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "It's always good to win and know the hard work is paying off. Hopefully this will give us more confidence in the rest of our tournaments."
This was Miami's first tournament win since seizing the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Sept. 24-25, 2007. The RedHawks bettered second-place William & Mary by five strokes at the Georgetown Intercollegiate and third-place Richmond by a nine-stroke margin.
"Good teams don't have to play great to win. We did some good things at this tournament and good things happened," said Lubahn "We just need to keep working hard and victories will come our way."
Crist finished just one stroke behind individual medalist Doug Hurson from William & Mary. It was Crist's best finish of his career, bettering his seventh-place tie at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. He has finished among the top 10 in two events this season and among the top 15 in three tournaments in 2008-09.
"Once again we were led by AC (Aaron Crist), who was exactly what we needed," said Lubahn. "He got off to a little bit of a rough start but came back with one of the better rounds of the day, and it was exciting to see him play that well."
The RedHawks had two others finish among the top 10. Sophomore Nathan Sutherland shot 73-74=147 for the tournament and tied for fourth place, while senior Ben Bastel shot 72-77=149 to tie for sixth place.
"After the last couple of tournaments, this was an important result to let us know that the extra work we're doing is paying off and that things are changing," added Lubahn. "We've worked a little bit harder, but hopefully this will send a message of what could happen if we work exponentially harder."
Senior Anthony Cordes shot 72-79=151 to tie for 16th place, and sophomore Michael Drobnick shot 76-78=154 to tie for 31st place.
Due to frost on Monday morning, which was originally scheduled as a 36-hole day, one of the rounds was cancelled and the tournament shortened to two rounds.
"This was a first-class event and was a good experience for our student-athletes to go to Washington D.C. over the weekend," said Lubahn. "We had solid senior leadership at this event, and hopefully this will be a springboard for us to do some special things this season."
Miami rounds out the fall portion of its schedule at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 27-28 in Las Cruces, N.M.
