Miami opens season with tie at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State Buckeyes needed the first shootout in a CCHA conference regular season game to get past the RedHawks 4-3 (SO) on Friday night in Columbus.

Corey Elkins, Zac Dalpe and Peter Boyd all converted on their shootout attempts to give Ohio State the two points in the CCHA. The game will be recorded as a tie in the eyes of the NCAA but Miami gets a point in the CCHA standings for forcing the shootout.

"It doesn't feel like a loss because we got a point," Blasi said. "We just need to keep getting contribution from our older guys while the younger guys get more experience."

Ohio State came out fast in the first period when Peter Boyd found the net off a cross ice pass from Sergio Somma and John Albert. The goal came on the power-play after Tommy Wingels was called for roughing after the whistle. Patrick Schafer added a short-handed goal for the Scarlet and Gary at 14:08 of the first off a cross ice pass from Chris Reed.

"It was a really good hockey game," head coach Enrico Blasi said. "Ohio State has much better speed up front and (Joseph) Palmer played great tonight. I think we got better as the game went on and were fortunate to get that five-on-three and a goal out of it. All night the five-on-five hockey game was exciting."

The RedHawks battled back in the second period when Carter Camper scored on a power play off assists from Jarod Palmer and Chris Wideman at 13:38. Justin Vaive tied the game off a rebound from captain Brian Kaufman to even the game, 2-2.

Sergio Somma gave Ohio State the lead 29-seconds into the third period and after several power play chances Jarod Palmer scored from the point tying the game 3-3.

For the game Miami went 2-for-9 on the power play and after allowing a goal in the Buckeye's first power play the RedHawks shutout the Scarlet and Gray (0-6) the rest of the way. Zach Pelletier was removed from the game after receiving a game misconduct at 9:55 of the third period.

In his first game Cody Reichard recorded 26 saves including 11 stops in the second period. Brandon Smith, Chris Wideman, Cameron Schilling, Will Weber and Reichard all played in their first game for the RedHawks.

The RedHawks and the Buckeyes will be back in action tomorrow night in Oxford, Ohio. The game will start at 7:07 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena and will be televised live on the Ohio News Network.
