OXFORD, Ohio - Steve Baker, longtime "Voice of the RedHawks" and Director of Broadcasting, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics at Miami University, AD Brad Bates announced today.
"Rare are the individuals within a department who daily demonstrate the extreme dedication, loyalty, work ethic and passion as our own Steve Baker," said Bates. "His daily actions continue to symbolically re-write his job description in meaningful and creative ways that inspire the rest of us in our service to this great university. We are very excited to recognize his extraordinary contributions to Miami athletics."
A native of Brookville, Ind., Baker has been involved in broadcasting Miami athletics for 19 of the last 23 seasons. In 1984, he initially served as on-site engineer for broadcasts, then handled color analyst duties for men's basketball, and was named to replace Omar Williams as play-by-play announcer prior to the 1993 football season. He has been "Voice" for Miami football and men's basketball for 10 of the last 14 years.
Baker was hired by Miami University as the Director of Broadcasting, on a part-time basis, in 2001, and that position was made full-time in 2003.
He worked for WOXY Radio in Oxford from 1984 until the summer of 2003 in a variety of positions, including station manager for more than 10 years. Prior to his position at WOXY, he worked at local radio stations in Florida (Dade City), Indiana (Bedford & Richmond), Ohio (Hamilton) and Virginia (Crewe). His broadcast career began in 1977 at WOXY radio.
"I've always been honored just to be associated with Miami University, the athletic department and what they stand for," said Baker. "To be named an assistant athletic director here is something that I never expected. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to be a part of the Miami athletics family in this role."
A resident of Oxford, Baker's family includes his wife, Sandy, and daughters Sarah (13) and Samantha (10).
