Jan. 4, 2008

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, OH - Miami lost to Bowling Green Friday night, marking the first time since February 24, 2007, the RedHawks were defeated on the road, playing a non-neutral site game.

Freshman forward Tommy Wingels scored his 10th goal of the season, giving him the most goals scored by a conference rookie this season. BGSU freshman Jacob Cepis had tied Wingels for a short time, but Wingels reclaimed the top spot with his third period goal.

Just 1:17 into the game, Falcons' forward Jacob Cepis netted the first goal of the night, his eighth of the season.

Junior alternate captain Brian Kaufman evened the affair up on the team's first power play of the evening, tipping a blue line shot from junior defenseman Alec Martinez past Bowling Green netminder Jimmy Sprat.

The Falcons answered back quickly when Cepis untied the game with his second goal of the night just 1:23 after Miami scored the equalizer. At this point, Cepis was tied with Tommy Wingels for the CCHA lead in goals scored by a rookie.

Bowling Green extended its lead with a power-play goal halfway through the second period. Sophomore James Perkin was the Falcon doing the damage, tallying his sixth score of the season, and fifth with the man-advantage.

BGSU added its fourth goal of the game with only 32 seconds remaining in the second period. Perkin won an offensive zone face off and shuffled the puck to Kai Kantola, who riffled a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Zatkoff.

Senior goaltender Charlie Effinger was called into duty to begin the final 20 minutes, and was immediately tested, turning aside two point-blank shots in the first three minutes of the period. Effinger stopped the five shots he faced in relief.

After the Falcons' killed off a five-minute major penalty to begin the third period, Wingels pulled the RedHawks one goal closer, reclaiming his spot as the conference's highest scoring rookie. The score would end up being the last of the night.

Miami will battle Bowling Green again Saturday night before heading back to Oxford. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
