Men's Swimming and Diving Take Down Bulls, 138-105

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Miami University's men's swimming and diving team used two wins apiece from freshman Darin Smith and senior Ryan McHugh to defeat the University at Buffalo Bulls in Buffalo, N.Y. Saturday afternoon. Miami earned seven wins in the 13-event program to improve to 5-4 in dual meets this season.
Smith started a string of first-place finishes as he squeaked out a win in the 1000 freestyle by two-hundredths of a second. McHugh followed with a first-place time of 1:43.89 in the 200 freestyle, before sophomore David Brown and sophomore Michael Carroll added first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively.
Buffalo rebounded with top finishes in the one-meter dive and the 200 butterfly, before McHugh led another 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle. McHugh touched the wall in a time of 47.10 and Robert Jackson finished behind McHugh with a time of 48.50.
The Bulls swept the points in the 200 butterfly, but Smith responded for Miami with his second win of the day, this time in the 500 freestyle. Smith recorded a time of 4:43.72. After a second-place finish in the one-meter dive, junior Chris Heaton notched a win in the three-meter dive with a score of 345.75. With two events remaining, Buffalo took a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, but the RedHawks sealed a 138-105 victory with a top-finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
Miami concludes the home portion of its schedule next week when it hosts Kenyon College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, before welcoming Eastern Michigan to the Nixon Aquatic Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.
