ATHENS, Ohio - Senior guard Amanda Jackson scored 20 points, her 13th 20-point game of the season and the 32nd of her career, but the RedHawks fell to Ohio, 55-74 in Athens, Ohio, Saturday afternoon. Jackson broke the Miami single-season record for most 20-point games in a season and tied Heather Cusick for the most 20-point games in a career (32). Ohio (9-8; 2-2 MAC) shot 54.7 percent from the field for the game compared to 28.6 percent for Miami (10-8; 2-2 MAC).
After opening up 4-of-8 from the field in the first four minutes, Miami hit just one if its next 10 shots heading into the second media timeout. Despite the shooting woes, Miami forced Ohio into nine turnovers, which kept the RedHawks within five points, 12-17, with 11:40 to play. After Ohio's lead reached 12 points, 29-17, with 4:55 to play, Jackson scored nine points during an 11-0 Miami run to cut its deficit to one point, 28-29, with 1:20 remaining in the half. In the final minute, Ohio's Jennifer Bushby hit a three-pointer and that gave the Bobcats a 32-28 lead heading into the half.
Jackson finished the half with 13 points to lead all scorers, while senior forward Laura Markwood added five points and four rebounds. Bushby came off the bench for 11 points in the first half to lead Ohio. The Bobcats hit 50 percent (6-of-12) of their three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, while the RedHawks went just 1-of-9 from downtown.
Jackson scored seven of Miami's 10 points coming out of the half to keep Miami within three points, 38-41, with 15:30 to play. Ohio's Lauren Kohn and Lauren Hmiel combined to score eight consecutive points, giving Ohio an 11-point lead, 49-38, at the 12-minute mark of the second half. For the remainder of the game, the RedHawks were unable to close within 11 points, and the RedHawks fell to the Bobcats, 55-74.
Jackson finished with 20 points and Markwood added 14 points and 11 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season.
Miami finishes its first round of MAC East Divisional play when the RedHawks travel to MAC East leader Bowling Green on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on BCSN and can be heard on MSNi.
