OXFORD, Ohio - - A pair of Eastern Michigan goals in the first 23 minutes of the match helped the Eagles hold on to defeat the Miami soccer team, 2-1, in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) opener for both teams Friday afternoon at the Miami Soccer Field.
EMU scored both its markers off corner kicks, with its first tally coming in the fourth minute as Maggie Christensen contributed her team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from Sara Schiffbauer. Christensen was able to punch in a bouncing ball that deflected off a RedHawk defender in a battle for the ball in front of the net.
Katie Lozar added her second goal of the year as a result of a helper from Stephanie Janssens in the 23rd minute to give the visitors a two-goal lead.
Miami lit up the scoreboard in the 41st minute when sophomore Jackie Hardek (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) corralled a loose ball that also caromed off an Eagle defender through traffic. Hardek's goal was her second of the year, and second in as many games.
Shots were even at nine apiece heading into the intermission.
The RedHawks outshot the Eagles by a 5-2 clip in the second stanza, but goalkeeper Maggie Manville would not allow Miami to gain the equalizer. The RedHawks mustered numerous point-blank shots within 15 feet of the goal, but several shots went wide or high above Manville's perch in net.
Sophomore Krista Pace (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmont Park) saw her record fall to 2-4-2 after a four-save effort, while Manville accrued four saves and pushed her season mark to 3-3-2.
Miami is now 2-4-2 overall and 0-1 in MAC play. Eastern Michigan moves to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
The RedHawks take on Central Michigan Sunday (Sept. 30) with a 1 p.m. matchup at the Miami Soccer Field.
