MANHATTAN, Kan.--Winning its first tournament since March 30-31, 2001, the Miami University golf team captured the 2007 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate title, besting second-place Kansas State by an impressive 12-stroke margin.
Freshman Michael Drobnick (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) fired a 70 on the Par 72 course in Tuesday's final round to seize individual medalist honors, posting an even par 216 over three rounds, while junior Ben Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) finished in a tie for second at one-over par 217.
Drobnick's first-place individual finish marked Miami's first top individual finish since Wood tied for first at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate on April 29, 2007. Drobnick and Wood were tied for second place heading into the final round and were two strokes behind tournament leader Mike Van Sickle of Marquette. Van Sickle finished in a tie for second, shooting a 73 on the final day.
All of Miami's lineup finished among the top 16. In addition to the top finishes by Drobnick and Wood, sophomore Andrew Aseltine (Fremont, Ohio/Fremont Ross) tied for 12th place at nine-over par 225, while freshman Nathan Sutherland (Wyomissing, Pa./Holy Name) finished in 15th place at 10-over par 226. Junior Ben Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) finished in a 16th-place tie at 11-over par 227. Sophomore Craig Voorhees (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire), who was competing as an individual at the event, finished in a tie for 23rd place at 14-over par 230.
The RedHawks held an eight-stroke lead on the Wildcats heading into Tuesday's final round and shot a 292 as a team in the third round--the best third-round score of any team--to further extend their margin of victory. Miami won the tournament by posting an 11-over par 875 as a team. Miami's last team win was at the 2001 Johnny Owens Invitational.
The RedHawks return to action Oct. 15-16 at the Belmont Fall Shootout in Franklin, Tenn.
