OXFORD, Ohio - - The Miami University women's soccer team received a pair of goals from sophomore Kersta Carlson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and outshot Butler by a count of 35-12, but the RedHawks and Bulldogs played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie Friday night at the Miami Soccer Field.
Carlson netted her first goal as a collegian in the sixth minute with a quick shot through traffic that sailed over BU goalkeeper Olivia Walter's left shoulder. Junior Allison Berkey (Hopkinton, Mass) provided the lone assist on the goal, her third of the season.
Butler struck back in the 19th minute as Angie Muir chipped in her third marker of the year off a helper from Courtney Lord. Lord played the ball right in front of the net and eventually sidestepped Miami sophomore goalkeeper Krista Pace (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmont Park) to kick the ball into an open net.
Miami held posted a 9-3 in the shot chart heading into the intermission.
Carlson put the RedHawks ahead for the second time of the match with a tally in the 77th minute. Freshman Sara Lund (Malmo, Sweden/Malmo Borgarskola) made a tight pass through a host of Bulldogs that Carlson was able to bury into the left side of the net. Lund's helper was her third of the year, and pushed her team-leading point total to eight.
The Bulldogs knotted the score at 2-2 when Lindsey Fox bagged her second goal of the year with some graceful ball-handling that allowed her to dangle in all alone on Pace and kick the ball into the left side of the net in the 81st minute.
Both teams had numerous chances to earn the game-winner, but after two 10:00 minute overtimes the stalemate could not be avoided.
For the match, the home team recorded a 14-7 lead in shots on goal, along with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Pace made two saves and her record now stands at 1-2-2. Walter moves to 2-2-1 after turning aside 12 shots for BU.
Miami resumes non-conference competition with a dual at Michigan next Friday (Sept. 21). The match will begin at 7 p.m.
