OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's soccer team got their 2007 season off to a great start with a 5-1 win over Morehead State at the Miami Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

Freshman forward Julie Thompson burst onto the scene for Miami, registering a hat trick in her first collegiate contest. Fellow newcomer Sara Lund added two goals and an assist, while junior Allison Berkey had two assists and freshman Jessica Byron assisted one goal for the RedHawks.

Miami scored first when Lund scored on a breakaway with an assist from Byron at the 17-minute mark. The RedHawks outshot the Eagles 24-17 and were led defensively by goalkeeper Krista Pace who allowed just one goal and registered six saves.

The hosts had 13 fouls to Morehead's 11, while each team had three corner kicks.

Miami, 1-0, will travel to non-conference rival University of Cincinnati on Sunday to face the Bearcats at 1 p.m. The Bearcats went 2-1 in their three pre-season exhibition matches, downing Eastern Kentucky and Ohio and falling to Trinity Western.
