OXFORD, Ohio -- Six members of Miami University's men's swimming team, competing as RedHawk Aquatics, will participate at the 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, starting Tuesday, July 31, at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Competition continues through August 4.
This event will feature America's most decorated swimmers as they test the waters leading up to the 2008 Olympic Trials. The ConocoPhillips meet will serve as the USA National Team's selection for the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix to be contested August 21-24 in Chiba, Japan.
Miami's Paul Ricard (Sr., Bowling Green), two-time Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Year, will compete in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Tuesday, the 400-meter free on Thursday, and the 200-free on Friday.
Ryan McHugh (Sr., Sylvania), an All-MAC second-team selection last March, will swim in the 100-meter freestyle event on Wednesday.
The RedHawks will also compete in the 400-meter freestyle relay, the 400 medley relay, and the 800 freestyle relay. Along with Ricard and McHugh, Mike Carroll (So., Toledo), Chase Mortimer (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.), Dave Brown (So., Lake Orion, Mich.), and Nick DuPuis (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.), plus alternate Blake Norman (Sr., Greenwood, Ind.), will be available to compete in the relay competition for Coach Pete Lindsay.
"Paul Ricard will be focusing upon making his Olympic trial marks in the 400 and 1,500 at this meet," said Lindsay. "Ryan McHugh just qualified for this meet in his last event last Thursday night. It's Ryan's first time in national competition, so it's a real milestone for him just to make the meet."
Last week, 15 members of the men's and women's swimming team competed at MU's Nixon Natatorium in the USA Swimming Central Zone Section 3 Championships. The men finished sixth among 46 teams, while the women placed 21st among 48 teams.
