CINCINNATI--Miami University's baseball team got behind early and was not able to overtake the Bearcats as the RedHawks (26-18) lost at the University of Cincinnati (26-23) on Wednesday evening, 7-2.
Cincinnati took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off a pair of doubles and a single. Miami closed within one in the top of the third inning. With two outs after a double play, senior Brandon Hillier doubled to left field. Sophomore Jordan Petraitis singled through the right side in the next at-bat to plate Hillier and extend his hitting streak to 27 games while also shrinking the Bearcat lead to 2-1.
The Bearcats were able to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring three runs off four hits to take a 5-1 advantage.
Junior Evan Armitage belted his seventh triple of the season with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to get into scoring position for the RedHawks. The triple boosted Armitage into a tie for second on Miami's single-season list, and he is just one shy of tying the Miami single-season mark of eight set by Ryne Robinson in 2005. Armitage crossed home on a wild pitch to put the RedHawks within three runs of the Bearcats, 5-2.
UC tacked on runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings off an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, respectively, to push its lead to 7-2.
At the plate, Miami was led by Hillier, who went 2-for-4 with a run, and Armitage, who was 1-for-2 with a run.
Miami returns to action, traveling to Ohio for a three-game conference series May 11-13. Friday and Saturday's games are set for 6 p.m. with Sunday's game scheduled for 1 p.m. The RedHawks will then travel to Marshall for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, May 14.
