ATHENS, Ohio--Sustaining just its third shutout of the season and its first since falling at then No. 12 Texas on March 10, Miami University's baseball team suffered a 9-0 loss at Ohio University on Friday evening.
The loss dropped the RedHawks to 26-19 overall and 13-7 in Mid-American Conference action, while the Bobcats moved to 21-28 overall and 6-16 in league action.
Junior Evan Armitage started the game with a single up the middle for Miami, but the RedHawks could not muster another hit throughout the remainder of the game.
After the teams played a scoreless first inning, Ohio put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Chris Klimko plated Brandon Besl on a fielder's choice and Willie Walker scored on a Bryant Witt ground out.
The teams again played a scoreless inning before the Bobcats added another run to their tally in the bottom of the fourth inning off a Witt single to center field to allow Walker to score. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Walker hit an RBI single to right field, which scored Marc Krauss to extend the Bobcat lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Zach Hartle crossed home on an RBI single to the pitcher by Jeremie Rehak. A sacrifice fly in the next at-bat allowed Witt to score to push the Ohio lead to 6-0.
With two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, J.T. Osburn belted a three-run home run to left centerfield, which put the Ohio lead at 9-0.
Sophomore Jordan Petraitis had his impressive hitting streak halted at 27 games.
Miami and Ohio will play the second game of a three-game weekend series at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 12.
