MINNEAPOLIS - Making his first career appearance at the national meet, Miami University junior Paul Ricard finished 29th in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle Thursday at the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
As the only athlete from the Mid-American Conference to swim in the 500 freestyle, Ricard clocked in with a 29th-place time of 4:23.85. His performance was just off his school-record pace of 4:21.84, which he set at the 2007 MAC Championships.
Ricard finished ahead of 13 swimmers in the 500 freestyle, including five Big Ten swimmers and five Southeastern Conference swimmers. Ricard also defeated five athletes who were seeded higher than him heading into the preliminary heats.
Stanford's Shaun Phillips clocked in with the top preliminary time of 4:14.82, but Southern Cal's Larsen Jensen took home the 500 freestyle national title with his first-place time of 4:09.80 in the finals. Jensen's time was a new pool record.
The two-time MAC Swimmer of the Year, Ricard is slated to compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m.
